Sergio Gor, nominated by President Donald Trump as the next ambassador to India, stated on Thursday that the United States and India are 'not that far apart' regarding tariff negotiations. His comments suggest a potential easing of trade tensions in the near future.
As the director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and a close aide to Trump, Gor emphasized that the relationship between the US and India remains 'warm and strategically significant' despite recent conflicts over tariffs and India's acquisition of Russian oil.
During a Senate committee hearing for his ambassadorial position, Gor expressed optimism about resolving tariff issues soon, stating, 'We’re not that far apart on a deal on these tariffs. I believe it will be settled in the coming weeks.' He also noted that both nations share long-term strategic objectives and enjoy a 'much warmer relationship than they have with China.'

Gor highlighted the critical nature of the US-India partnership during his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, asserting that India is 'one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world.' He outlined a detailed strategy aimed at enhancing this vital partnership, which he believes is essential for both bilateral relations and global stability.
He remarked, 'India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.' Gor pointed out India's geographical significance, economic growth, and military strength as pivotal to regional stability and global prosperity.
Strategic Goals and Defense Cooperation
Gor committed to advancing US interests in this partnership, stating, 'Under President Donald Trump’s strong leadership, I’m dedicated to promoting America’s interests in this important partnership.' He emphasized the need for increased defense cooperation, fair trade practices, enhanced energy security, and technological advancements.
One of Gor's primary focuses is to deepen defense and security collaboration with India. He mentioned plans to expand joint military exercises, promote co-development and co-production of defense systems, and finalize crucial defense sales, which would strengthen cooperation between the two nations' armed forces.
Gor also identified significant opportunities for the US in India, particularly in sectors like artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals, noting that India's large population and growing middle class present vast potential for collaboration.
Trade and Economic Initiatives
He pledged to advocate for fair and reciprocal trade that benefits American workers and businesses, aiming to reform Indian markets to make them more accessible and transparent. Gor expressed his ambition to achieve President Trump’s 'Mission 500,' which aims to double bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030, thereby creating jobs and prosperity for both nations.
Gor's testimony also addressed the need to counter China's economic influence, stating, 'Improving US-India trade ties will not only enhance US competitiveness but also diminish China's economic leverage over other countries.' He plans to encourage Indian investments in US manufacturing and strengthen the pharmaceutical supply chain.
On technology, Gor highlighted the growing collaboration between the US and India in critical and emerging technologies, referencing the US-India Trust Initiative launched earlier this year, which aims to leverage US tech strengths to compete with China in areas like AI and semiconductors.
Energy Cooperation and Regional Stability
Gor emphasized the importance of energy cooperation, stating his intention to increase American energy exports to India, positioning the US as a leading supplier of crude oil and natural gas.
He concluded his testimony by reiterating the strategic significance of a stable South Asia, where India plays a crucial role. 'A stable South Asia is in the interest of the United States and all nations. The US-India partnership will define the 20th and 21st centuries,' he remarked.
In closing, Gor expressed his commitment to ensuring that the United States remains a global leader while fostering a mutually beneficial partnership with India, stating, 'If confirmed as ambassador, I will work to ensure the United States remains a global leader, while fostering a partnership that benefits both nations.'
